چکیده

We extend the framework of simple temporal problems studied originally by Dechter, Meiri and Pearl to consider constraints of the form x1 − y1 6 r1 ∨ · · · ∨ xn − yn 6 rn, where x1, . . . , xn, y1, . . . , yn are variables ranging over the real numbers, r1, . . . , rn are real constants, and n> 1. This is a wide class of temporal constraints that can be used to model a variety of problems in temporal reasoning, scheduling, planning, and temporal constraint databases. We have implemented several progressively more efficient algorithms for the consistency checking problem for this class of temporal constraints: backtracking, backjumping, three variations of forward checking, and forward checking with backjumping. We have partially ordered the above algorithms according to the number of visited search nodes and the number of performed consistency checks. Although our problem is non-binary, our results agree with the results of Kondrak and van Beek who consider only binary constraints. We have also studied the performance of the above algorithms experimentally using randomly generated sets of data and job shop scheduling problems. The experiments with random instances allowed us to locate the hard region for this class of problems. The results show that hard problems occur at a critical value of the ratio of disjunctions to variables.  2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Coping With Disjunctions in Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Path-consistency algorithms, which are polynomial for discrete problems, are exponential when applied to problems involving quantitative temporal information. The source of complexity stems from specifying relationships between pairs of time points as disjunction of intervals. We propose a polynomial algorithm, called ULT, that approximates path-consistency in Temporal Constraint Satisfaction P...

Local Probing for Resource

This paper investigates a form of algorithm hybridization that combines constraint satisfaction algorithms with local search algorithms. On one hand, constraint satisfaction algorithms are eeective at nding feasible solutions for tightly constrained problems with complex constraints. On the other hand, local search algorithms are usually better at nding solutions that are good with respect to a...

Short and Long Supports Short and Long Supports for Constraint Propagation

Constraint solvers typically employ a systematic backtracking search, interleaving the choice of an instantiation of a decision variable with the propagation of the constraints to determine the consequences of the choice made. Special-purpose constraint propagation algorithms (such as those for the element constraint) frequently make implicit use of short supports — by examining a subset of the...

Short and Long Supports for Constraint Propagation

Special-purpose constraint propagation algorithms frequently make implicit use of short supports — by examining a subset of the variables, they can infer support (a justification that a variable-value pair may still form part of an assignment that satisfies the constraint) for all other variables and values and save substantial work – but short supports have not been studied in their own right....
